The Chatanika River is a 206 km long left tributary of the Tolovana River in central Alaska .
The Chatanika River arises at the confluence of McManus Creek and Smith Creek in the Yukon-Tanana Highlands . From there it flows 120 km in a west-southwest direction through the hill country. In some places it has numerous narrow river loops and oxbow lakes . The Steese Highway follows the course of the river for the first 60 km to the settlement of Chatanika . After another 10 km the Elliott Highway crosses the river. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline crosses the river three miles to the west . The river runs 25 km north of the city of Fairbanks . In the lower reaches the river reaches the Tanana lowlands. It turns to the northwest and finally flows 7 km south of the settlement of Minto into the Tolovana River. 50 km above the mouth, Goldstream Creek joins Chatanika River from the left. 1.7 km above the mouth, the Chatanika River joins the Tatalina River .
