Location of the Matanushka River |
The Matanuska River is a 120 km long river in southern Alaska that flows in a southwest direction through the valley between the Talkeetna and the Chugach Mountains .
It arises at the confluence of the East Fork and South Fork Matanuska Rivers north of the Chugach Mountains . The Matanuska Glacier feeds the Matanuska River a few kilometers downstream. The Matanuska River flows westward and flows into the Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet . The river drains an area of approx. 5400 km². The mean discharge at the gauge near Palmer is 280 m³ / s. The highest runoffs occur during the glacial melt in the months of June to August.
The Glenn Highway ( Alaska Route 1 ) runs parallel to the Matanuska River. The Matanuska Valley is one of the most fertile areas of Alaska and one of the few areas where agriculture is practiced. Together with the Susitna River , the Matanuska River is named for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley ( English Matanuska-Susitna Valley , Mat-Su for short ) north of Anchorage , one of the most densely populated regions of Alaska.
