The Talkeetna Mountains are a mountain range of the North American Coast Mountains in the South Central region of the US state Alaska . They lie north of Anchorage between the Chugach Mountains in the east and the Alaska range that encloses them in a semi-arc to the northwest .
The Susitna flows west of the Talkeetna Mountains and the Matanuska River south-east . They extend 178 kilometers north-south and 278 kilometers east-west and cover an area of 26,537 km². The highest mountain is the Sovereign Mountain at 2,697 meters. In the southwest of the Talkeetna Mountains , a road runs over Hatcher Pass .
The Talkeetna Mountains are largely state-owned and are administered, among others, by the Department of Natural Resources .
