The Chugach Mountains are about 500 km long, east-west running mountain range in southern Alaska on the Gulf of Alaska . They form the northernmost part of the North American coastal mountains and were formed along a subduction zone .
The Chugach Mountains are the youngest mountain range in Alaska. They have an extension of 50,319 km² and extend 242 km in north-south and 468 km in east-west direction. The highest mountain is Mount Marcus Baker with 4016 m .
The Chugach State Park and Chugach National Forest reserves are part of the Chugach Mountains. Richardson and Seward Highway cross the mountain range.
The name "Chugach" has its origin in the Eskimo people "Chugachmiut" and was first recorded in Russian as "Chugatz" and "Tchougatskoi". In 1898, WR Abercrombie, a captain in the United States Army , named the mountain range as the Chugach Mountains .
Flora and fauna
The tree line is in the Chugach Mountains at 600 m. In vegetation zones from forest to alpine tundra, hemlocks , paper birches , sitka and white spruces grow, among other things , on the slopes facing the Cook Inlet also grape elder .
Dall sheep and mountain goats live at higher altitudes, while arctic ground squirrels , ice-gray marmots and pikas live in the tundra regions . There are also black and brown bears , elk , red fox , Canadian lynx , North American tree prick , ptarmigan and golden eagle .
