Pacific Coast Mountains in North America
The Pacific Coastal Mountains are a series of mountain ranges that stretch from Alaska to southern Mexico . They were created by plate tectonic forces when the Farallon Plate (today only its remains, known as the Juan de Fuca and Cocos plates) collided with the North American Plate and raised the folds of mountains . From Alaska to northern California , the volcanism that occurs can still be observed today. Earthquakes and seaquakes are possible all along the coast.
The Kaskadenkette and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges, which were created geologically earlier, are not included in the coastal mountains in the strict sense . The former has a transition zone to the coastal mountains in the Siskiyou Mountains , the latter is separated from the coastal mountains by the California Long Valley .
The range of coastal mountains is broken only by a large river, the Columbia River . It flows into the Pacific between the Olympic Mountains and the Oregon Coast Range and forms the borders between Washington and Oregon .
