The Taku River is an approximately 87 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the Boundary Ranges , a mountain range of the Coast Mountains , on the North American Pacific coast.
It is fed by the Stikine Icecap in the south and the Juneau Icefield in the north .
The river is named Taku from the confluence of the Inklin River and Nakina River around 50 km southeast of Atlin Lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It flows southwest, crosses the Canadian-American border and flows into Taku Inlet , a bay of Stephens Passage , almost 30 km northeast of Alaska's capital Juneau . The total length with source rivers is 250 km. The catchment area covers 29,800 km², of which 2300 km² is in Alaska. At level 08BB005 ( ⊙ ) near Juneau, the mean discharge is 390 m³ / s.
In Taku Inlet, the river meets the Taku Glacier , which dammed it several times until the 18th century. The resulting reservoir broke through the ice dam for the last time in 1750 and has not been rebuilt since.
The lower reaches of the Taku River, along with the Alexander Archipelago, are the habitat of the Taku , a group of the Tlingit Indians.
