The Atlin Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia . On its eastern bank lies the village of Atlin , the only major settlement on the lake.
Atlin Lake is almost entirely in British Columbia. Only the extreme northern tip is beyond the provincial border in the Yukon Territory . The 145 km long lake has an area of 798 km², the lake level is 668 m above sea level, the maximum depth is 283 m. Other information is: 589 km² of water surface, 775 km² of total area including islands.
On Teresa Island is the 2062 m high Birch Mountain , the highest peak on an island in a freshwater lake; this island is - like the entire south of the lake and its surroundings - part of the Atlin Provincial Park and Recreation Area .
Atlin Lake is referred to in individual sources as the origin of the Yukon River . The short Atlin River drains Atlin Lake to nearby Tagish Lake . At level 09AA006 ( ⊙ ) at the discharge from Atlin Lake, the mean discharge is 97 m³ / s.
The name is derived from the Tlingit expression Aa Tlein for "large body of water".
To the east of the lake is the Atlin volcanic field .
