course
The Bekau rises near Christinenthal . From there it flows south to Looft , makes an arc to the west and then flows south between Dragerborn and Drage , in a south-westerly direction past the former Kaaksburg and under the federal highway 23 . In a south-westerly direction it flows past Eversdorf to Krummendiek , from where it flows in a south-easterly direction through Bekdorf and finally flows into the Stör at Bekmünde and river kilometer 60. The course below Bekmünde has been straightened; originally the Bekau meandered in the south around Bekmünde and flowed into the Stör half a kilometer further east.
The Bekau used to be navigable at least as far as the Kaaksburg - also called Kaakser Au here - and was influenced by the tides up to its dike . Today it is regulated in particular by the main Bekmünde pumping station. The water level was previously regulated by two locks; the coat of arms of Bekmünde still indicates this today.
The Bekau is a gravelly lowland river . Important tributaries are the Mühlenau and the Ottenbütteler Mühlenbach . Its catchment area covers around 14,741 hectares .
