history
The villages in the Looft area were created in different periods of time and have developed different shapes. The peculiarities of the landscape, the course of the meadows and paths and the once water-filled valleys have influenced this development. According to the Schleswig-Holstein topography from 2005, flint artifacts such as hatchets and flint daggers testify to the presence of people in today's municipal area as early as the Neolithic (around 4300 to 2300 BC). As impressive witnesses of their burial culture, they left behind a so-called giant bed (elongated burial mound with several stone chambers). This grave is located in the eastern part of the district in the Scharfenhorn state forest. However, it is mostly destroyed. In addition to this giant bed, there were several barrows (barrows) from the Neolithic and Bronze Age (around 2300 to 1600 BC) in Looft , which, however, have since been leveled. Two bronze swords and a bronze dagger that were found in 1887 come from a grave. In another mound, excavators found a spearhead, dagger, and sword in 1893. Remnants of iron slag found in 1976 indicate prehistoric iron smelting.
The prehistoric inhabitants of the landscape liked to build their settlements on heights of sand that were surrounded by meadows and swampy terrain. The village of Looft itself is 6 to 14 meters above sea level and the highest elevation in the district, the Bollsberg, can at least have a height of 33 meters above sea level. Although this mountain has been called Rolfsberg for generations, the official land maps say Bollsberg. The place for their residence had to provide the residents with food, give them the opportunity to protect themselves from the cold in the cold season, and provide them with building materials for their dwellings and, in turn, for permanent building sites. Such a settlement was probably also the district. The Bekau provided for the irrigation of the meadows, supplied fish and offered enough drinking water for humans and animals. In the moor and heather area to the east, people were able to make peat and use heather as litter for cattle. Since the place name Looft, according to all previous knowledge, suggests the existence of large areas of wood and wood, one can assume that there was enough wood available for building and fuel. According to the size of the district and its name form, Drage and Looft are among the oldest settlements in Holstengau . Looft is mentioned for the first time in 1281 and is referred to here as "Lovethe", which means wood or forest with deciduous trees derived from "Loof equals leaves" . The name could also be associated with tan, the tannin in tree bark.

coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided by a lowered silver wavy bar of blue and red. Above a silver double oak, below a left-facing, lying golden Bronze Age sword. "
The double oak in the center of the municipality of Looft was planted in 1928 as a symbol for the indissoluble connection or indivisible unity of Schleswig and Holstein. The wave bar symbolizes the Bekau, which flows through the municipality. The golden sword in the base of the shield refers to an archaeological excavation find in the Looft district. Further prehistoric finds in the municipality show an early settlement of this region. The colors blue, white and red express the country you belong to.
