About this picture

Agethorst ( Low German : Aathorst / Oothorst ) is a municipality in the Steinburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . Aukamp, Burenbrook and Tongrube Alsen are in the municipality.

Geography and traffic

Agethorst is located about 10 km northwest of Itzehoe in a rural area. The federal highway 23 runs directly northeast from Itzehoe to Heide , to the southwest the federal highway 431 runs parallel to it . In the community there are thatched farmhouses next to new buildings.

history

From 1908 to 1977 the Agethorster cable car was in operation, an approx. 13 km long material cable car with which the raw material clay was transported from Agethorst to the Alsenschen Portland cement factory in Itzehoe . It was the longest cable car in Germany. Even today, the flooded open- cast mining holes known as Alsens clay pit bear witness to the industrial history of the municipality. In the place there is a memorial for the dead of the two world wars. The Sparkasse manager Albert Stange was Mayor of Agethorst for 50 years. From 1945 to 1995, as also noted on the street sign of the Mayor-Stange-Weg named after him.

politics

Community representation

Since the local elections in 2013, the KWG voting community has had all seven municipal council seats.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In blue and green divided by a broad silver bar grafted at the bottom and limited at the top by a flattened mountain of three, therein three green leaves 1: 2, each accompanied by a blue cable car mast."

The three leaves in the coat of arms are reminiscent of the once very wooded landscape. They also refer to a possible interpretation of the place name, according to which the basic word " Horst " derives from "undergrowth", "bush forest" or "wood". Two parts of a mast construction are arranged on both sides, which are supposed to symbolize the former clay mining . The masts currently shaped the image of the community. In the foot of the shield, the pit once again points out the formerly great economic importance of clay mining in the community. The clay obtained in it was used to make cement . After the clay mining ended, a species-rich lake formed here. The Dreiberg in Schildhaupt refers to the "Blocksberg" in the southwest of the municipality, which at 53 meters is the highest elevation in the municipality.
