Location of the municipality of Breitenburg in the Steinburg district | ||
Breitenburg ( Low German : Bredenborg ) is a municipality in the Steinburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . The Breitenburg Castle and the Temple of Nordoe are located in the municipality. The residential area Nordoe and the castle area Alt-Breitenburg are in the municipal area.
Geography and traffic
Breitenburg is about four kilometers southeast of Itzehoe an der Stör ; the district of Nordoe is south of Itzehoe. At the Breitenburg ferry , the state road 116 leads over the Stör. The federal motorway 23 runs south of the municipality from Hamburg to Itzehoe.
history
In 1526 acquired Johann Rantzau the Geest height by the lands of the monastery Bordesholm in parish ankaufte Breitenberg on the sturgeon, which were deserted by a flood. This is where the community is located today. Johann Rantzau had his castle Breitenburg built here in 1531, which has been in the possession of Count Rantzau almost continuously since then. The rule of Breitenburg was passed on to his son, the governor Heinrich, while the Bothkamp estate fell to the younger son Paul.
Breitenburg Castle
In the 16th century, Breitenburg Castle was one of the centers of Renaissance humanism in northern Germany. In 1627 it was stormed by Wallenstein and the extensive library stolen. Parts of the palace complex were burned down or devastated by Wallenstein's troops.
The manor house received its present form after extensive redesigns in the 19th century and houses the Thorvaldsen gallery with works by Bertel Thorvaldsen and a library.
Incorporations
On February 1, 1973, part of the neighboring municipality of Münsterdorf, which then had more than 100 inhabitants, was incorporated.
economy
The Saturn chalk pit , which is no longer mined, but which was discussed for the construction of a pumped storage power plant , is partly in the municipality.
politics
Community representation
Of the eleven seats in the municipal council has Wählergemeinschaft KWG since the local elections in 2013 six seats and the SPD five.
coat of arms
Blazon : “In red on a green bar, which rests on the silver shield base with two blue wavy threads running through it, a silver Renaissance castle, consisting of four gabled houses built together, with two rows of arched windows (the two outer ones with pointed gables and a ridge chimney each, the two inner with stepped gables) and from a round central tower projecting on a trapezoidal ramp with an open, arched door and black onion dome. "
It is assumed that the core of the complex shown in the coat of arms, the four adjoining three-storey houses, dates from 1530 and can be ascribed to the building activities of Field Marshal Johann Rantzau. The expansion of the castle in the Renaissance style goes back to Heinrich Rantzau , the son of Johann , who was the governor of the Danish king in the duchies. The Breitenburg castle was preserved in this final form on a drawing from 1590 and was thus incorporated into today's coat of arms. The green bar and the silver shield base symbolize the rampart and the moat.
