The so-called Temple of Nordoe

The Temple of Nordoe (sometimes also the Pyramid of Nordoe ) is a monument erected in 1578 by order of Heinrich Rantzau near the Breitenburg Castle near Itzehoe in Schleswig-Holstein . The so-called temple in the Breitenburg district of Nordoe is actually a monument and its shape is similar to an obelisk or a pyramid , similar to the Rantzau obelisk and the former Segeberg pyramid in Bad Segeberg .

The Mannerist building stands on a base made of field stones. Its cuboid body is decorated with inscriptions that recall the friendship between the Danish king and his governor , the southern side serves as a sundial. The middle block is followed by a pyramid-shaped tip, which is crowned by a weather vane in the form of a stylized sturgeon . The Temple of Nordoe is also shown on the Rantzau plaque , the memorial was restored in 1967.

There is a regional legend about the construction of the building. The builder Heinrich Rantzau is said to have bet with the Danish King Friedrich II that he could build a tower within one night that towers over the top of the Kremper Church . The temple of Nordoe was erected as a landmark on the summit of a hill on the Münsterdorfer Geestinsel , so that its top was about five meters above the height of the church tower at that time, despite the building's low height. The king is said to have granted Heinrich Rantzau milling rights as a profit.
