Rantzau board

The Rantzau panel is a family tree of the Rantzau family made around 1587 for Heinrich Rantzau . The panel was painted by Daniel Freese and is currently on Gut Krengerup on the Danish island of Funen .

The family table goes back to an engraving that Heinrich Rantzau had made by Frans Hogenberg in Cologne around 1585 . It shows the different lines of the widely ramified Rantzaus, which, as Equites Originarii, belonged to the ancient noble families in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein . The background of the painting - a ground plan of the Schleswig-Holstein landscape - is supplemented with battles and events from family history. The so-called Temple of Nordoe (actually a stele ) is also shown at the foot of the family tree.

The panel has received art-historical and historical-genealogical significance primarily through its edge strip, on which almost fifty castles and mansions on Rantzau estates are depicted in their condition around 1580–1590. The buildings shown include Arnesvelde Castle , Trøjborg and the mansions of Nütschau , Salzau , Wandsbek , Rastorf , Breitenburg and Rantzau , among others . With Lütjenburg and " Gronovium ", two places around a church are also shown.

The additions A or Arx (Burg), OP for Oppidum ( Flecken ) and P / Præd for Praedium ( Vorwerk ) make it clear that there were different forms of property. Arx referred to a noble estate . This type of possessions only existed in Schleswig-Holstein since the Great State Register of 1524, which gave the owners high jurisdiction . In the register of 1652, this quality was defined as being attached to the goods, regardless of person or status. Bourgeois now also had the right to purchase noble goods. The courtyards called Praedium were not associated with these privileges. The noble lord claimed jurisdiction in the towns.

In the engraving of Hogenberg there are partly incorrect owner names : Grumtoft with owner "Andreas" (Rantzau) should be called "Andreas S. v. Claus"; Mustin wrong Hans S. v. Caspar (instead of Hans S. v. Henrik), Schönweide : Otto S. v. Hans (= Henrik S. v. Hans / Johann), German Nienhof : Anton S. v. Tönnies (better: Anton / Tönnies S. v. Tönnies), Neuhaus : Otto S. v. Heinrich (= Otto S. v. Hans); Salzau : Andreas S. v. Wolfgang (= Hans S. v. Daniel), Quarnbek : Christoph S. v. Christoph (= Christoph S. v. Benedikt), Hasselburg : Hans S. v. Caspar (= Hans S. v. Henrik), Schinkel : Otto S. v. Christoph (= Otto S. v. Henrik), Osterrade (offshoot of Kluven-siek) : Christoph S. v. Christoph (= Christoph S. v. Benedikt), Schafhaus : Paul (= Paul S. v. Johan), Rastorf : Claus son v. Uwe (= Claus S. v. Ove), Schmoel : Sons (NN) of Heinrich (= Jesper / Caspar S. v. Heinrich).
