The office was formed on April 1, 1948 from the nine communities of Breitenberg, Breitenburg, Kollmoor, Kronsmoor, Moordiek, Moordorf, Münsterdorf, Oelixdorf and Westermoor. The municipality of Lägerdorf, which had been administered full-time until then, gave up its freedom of office on April 1, 2003 and joined the office. On January 1, 2008, the municipalities of Auufer and Wittenbergen , which had previously belonged to the Kellinghusen-Land office, joined the office. The municipality of Moordorf gave up its independence on March 1, 2008 and was incorporated into the municipality of Westermoor.
coat of arms
Blazon : "Split of silver and red. In front a green oak tree with nine roots and nine leaves, behind the edge of the shield a half silver castle with a pointed tin tower and a total of nine windows."
The program of figures in the coat of arms of the Breitenburg office combines historical motifs with such natural conditions. The oak leaf indicates that the oak is the typical deciduous tree for the region. The castle in the left half of the shield refers on the one hand to the building that gave the office its name; on the other hand, it bears testimony to the importance of the noble owner family Rantzau , in particular their best-known representatives Johann and Heinrich , who built the Breitenburg in the 16th century and expanded it into the most stately aristocratic residence in the country. The shield tinging is done in the colors of the Rantzauschen family coat of arms, red and silver. The original nine municipalities are indicated by the nine quotations of the figure details (nine leaves, nine roots, nine windows).
