Location of the municipality of Wacken in the Steinburg district

Wacken is a municipality in the Steinburg district in Schleswig-Holstein .

The village is known for the Wacken Open Air music festival that takes place every year at the beginning of August . With more than 70,000 visitors, it is one of the largest metal festivals in the world , alongside the Hellfest and the Graspop Metal Meeting .

geography

Wacken is located about twelve kilometers northwest of Itzehoe and six kilometers east of the Kiel Canal . To the east of the village are the remains of the Alsen clay pit . There are no districts apart from the main town.

history

The place was first verifiably mentioned in 1148. Relics from Germanic prehistoric times and a megalithic tomb indicate an older settlement. The most important find are three belt buckles from the Bronze Age , which are exhibited today in the State Museum Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig .

A burial mound is located directly on the "Twischelberg" near the primary and secondary school. It is not clearly signposted.

Economy and Infrastructure

Wacken Open Air

Due to the annual crowds due to the Wacken Open Air, the income of the local businesses, especially food and retail stores as well as restaurants, increases significantly. During this time, many times more goods are sold in local supermarkets than usual. The landlord of the local restaurant Zur Post is also setting up a large beer garden with 3500 seats on the festival site on these days and can also drastically increase the income of his restaurant. The country inn "Zur Post" has since gone bankrupt and has since been owned by the WOA organizer Huebner, who revitalized the restaurant and gave it the subtitle "Zum Wackinger". The beer sales on the festival area with the large beer garden is therefore operated solely by the organizer. The Sparkasse Westholstein (formerly Country Savings Bank Schenefeld ) is since 2008 a prepaid - credit card called "Wacken card" out and was able to increase the number of its credit card customers by 50% in 2008 this way. During the festival, Bordesholmer Sparkasse AG also made several ATMs available on the festival grounds to supply visitors with cash ; In 2008, a total of around € 1.4 million was paid out in 13,800 transactions via this and the ATMs of the local branch.

The residents of Wacken also benefit from the event, especially children and young people can supplement their pocket money with small courier services.

The shops and restaurants in Wacken achieved income of around € 4,350 per inhabitant of the municipality of Wacken through the festival in 2007.

About three kilometers north of the Autobahn 23 runs from Hamburg to Heide with the Hanerau-Hademarschen (AS 6) and Schenefeld (AS 7) junctions . The state roads 130 and 131 connect the town with the motorway and the surrounding communities. To the south lies the state road 327 (former federal road 431 ). In Wacken there are two passenger benches for the directions Schenefeld, Vaale, Wilster, Besdorf and Itzehoe.
