Paul von Hedemann-Heespen , complete: Paul Christian Georg Carl von Hedemann, called von Heespen (* February 8, 1869 in German Nienhof , today part of Westensee ; † February 22, 1937 ibid) was a German administrative lawyer , landowner and regional historian .

Live and act

Paul von Hedemann-Heespen comes from that branch of the Schleswig-Holstein noble family von Hedemann who, after the death of Friedrich Christian von Heespen († 1776), the last of his line, benefited from the family entourage of Deutsch Nienhof donated by him Took the name of Hedemann, called von Heespen or Hedemann-Heespen for short . He was the son of Friedrich von Hedemann-Heespen (1827–1905) and his wife (since 1860) Anna, geb. Countess Reventlow at Kaltenhof (1841–1927).

After attending high school in Kiel and graduating from high school in 1886, he studied law at the universities of Marburg, Freiburg im Breisgau, Leipzig and Berlin until 1889. In 1890 he did his military service as a one-year volunteer with the 16 Hussar Regiment and entered the Prussian civil service as a trainee lawyer. Interrupted by two years of training in agriculture from 1897 to 1899 he worked as assessor and Councilor in Magdeburg , Mülheim an der Ruhr , Marburg, Gdansk, Hildesheim and Kiel.

With the death of his father in 1905, he became entertainer in German Nienhof and Pohlsee (now part of Langwedel ). In order to be able to devote himself entirely to the management of the estate, in 1907 he retired from civil service as a member of the government. D. and Lieutenant of the Reserve. From 1907 to 1909 he had the interior of the manor house redesigned by Deutsch Nienhof according to his ideas. The entrance hall was converted into two-storey and spacious rooms in the geometric Art Nouveau style.

Hedemann-Heespen made a name for himself primarily as a regional historian. For his historical research he was able to fall back on the extensive archive in Deutsch Nienhof, which went back to Christoph Gensch von Breitenau and his work for the Danish king.

In 1906 he published a three-volume manor history by Deutsch Nienhof and Pohlsee. From 1917 to 1919 he published Hedemann's family history in three volumes, and in 1926 his main work, The Duchies of Schleswig-Holstein and the Modern Era, appeared . There were also a number of essays and articles on historical topics and questions of the time in magazines and newspapers. For a time he managed the state library in Kiel.

The “idiosyncratic and spiritually original aristocrat”, the “idiosyncratic but also witty historian” represented his independent, sometimes idiosyncratic positions as a cultural functionary. In 1908 he was the first chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein Association for Homeland Security , was one of the founders of the Nordelbingen magazine and emphasized the cultural independence of Schleswig-Holstein , especially against Prussia.

As the first German since 1864, the Royal Danish Society for Patriotic Society and Language awarded him full membership in 1927. 1932 awarded him the Law and Political Science Faculty of the University of Wuerzburg her honorary doctorate , also in 1933 the philosophical faculty of the University of Erlangen .
