The Sparkasse Westholstein was formed in 2003 from the merger of the Sparkasse in Steinburg , based in Itzehoe, and the Alte Marner Sparkasse / Dithmarscher Kommunalbank , based in Marne and Heide.

On July 1, 2008, the Verbandssparkasse Meldorf , based in Meldorf , was merged.

On July 1, 2011, the Landsparkasse Schenefeld , based in Schenefeld , was finally incorporated.
