history

Changes in legal form

The Spar- und Leihkasse zu Bredstedt was founded on June 28, 1840 as the 56th Sparkasse in the area of today's Schleswig-Holstein. 28 Bredstedt citizens were involved in this. As was common in Schleswig-Holstein at the time, the two duchies were in personal union with the Danish kingdom, it was a private savings bank establishment.

The first change in the legal form of the Sparkasse took place in 1899. From then on it was operated in the form of a limited liability company. This was done for the purpose of being able to work exclusively for the benefit of the city of Bredstedt.

102 years after it was founded, there was another change in legal form. In order to place the savings bank under state supervision and to obtain the security of the ward, all shareholders donated an amount equal to the respective share in the foundation of the foundation savings bank of the same name.

The last change in legal form took place in 2004. With retroactive effect under commercial law to January 1, 2004, 00:00, the Sparkasse's banking operations were outsourced to a stock corporation. Since then, the Sparkasse has operated as a savings and loan bank to Bredstedt AG. The original foundation was renamed Stiftung Spar- und Leihkasse zu Bredstedt Finanzholding and continued to exist as the company holding company of the stock corporation.

Mergers

In the 1930s in particular, there was a wave of savings bank mergers. In 1937, Sparkasse Bredstedt was merged with Langenhorner and in 1942 with Ockholmer Spar- und Leihkasse. Main branches were opened in both places. At last there was only one (staffed) branch of the institute in Langenhorn.

In the post-war period in 1973, the savings and loan fund to Dbodum was also taken over. This event was a novelty at the time, as this institute was a registered cooperative . The local business in the form of a branch business continued until 2002.

Imbalance and entry of the savings bank association

In 2011, the Spar- und Leihkasse zu Bredstedt got into trouble, which initially resulted in merger talks with Sparkasse Mittelholstein AG on the takeover. However, these did not lead to success. As a result, the previous 25.1% minority shareholder, Haspa Finanzholding , and the Savings Banks and Giro Association for Schleswig-Holstein each took over 50% of the capital from the institute's own foundation. The association's participation in a savings bank was a novelty at the time and was the only remaining way out to save the savings bank operations. The takeover by the cooperative VR Bank eG in Niebüll , which is said to have submitted an offer, was not wanted for reasons of savings bank policy . The only remaining savings bank in the region that could have been considered for a merger, the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse , was itself a restructuring bank at the time and was therefore unable to raise the necessary capital.

Merger with the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse

At the end of January 2013, the supporting representatives from the savings bank organization announced that the Bredstedter Institute should now merge with the neighboring Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse. The merger finally took place with a merger agreement dated June 25, 2013, with retroactive effect to January 1, 2013. This ended the existence of the Savings and Leihkasse zu Bredstedt almost 173 years after its foundation on June 28, 1840.
