history

The Sparkasse zu Lübeck was founded in 1817 under the name “Spar- und Anleih-Casse” as a dependent institution by the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities . The first business day was June 12, 1817. It was held in the now defunct orphanage near the cathedral. Core task of the new savings bank was in after the Napoleonic occupation and subsequent liberation wars devastating battered city, "[...] to give all and every one occasion, and to demonstrate the profitability of their economizing or their purchase securely tributary ", thus at the same time to act as a capital collection point. The deposits were mostly borrowed as mortgage loans.

As a result of the recently introduced civil code , the Sparkasse obtained legal independence in 1905 in the legal form of a foundation .

As early as 1825, the Sparkasse moved from the orphanage to new business premises at 16 Breiten Strasse . In 1912, the Sparkasse moved into the newly built office building at Breite Straße 18, which was built right next door. The Sparkasse's headquarters are still located here today in the building that was newly built in 1965. In 1937, the Sparkasse zu Lübeck, which at that time still bore the name "Spar- und Anleihe -assen zu Lübeck", took over the Sparkasse in Travemünde . The Sparkasse adopted the name "Sparkasse zu Lübeck" in 1958. In 2004, the Sparkasse's banking operations were spun off from the foundation and transferred to a stock corporation , today's “Sparkasse zu Lübeck AG”. The foundation that once carried the Sparkasse became a non-profit organization that holds a 74% majority in Sparkasse zu Lübeck AG, the “Gemeinnützige Sparkassenstiftung zu Lübeck”. The foundation supports charitable and benevolent projects in Lübeck with amounts in the millions from the interest and dividends it receives. The remaining shares are held by Haspa Finanzholding in Hamburg .
