Gustav Willibald Gerhard Schneider (born April 22, 1904 in Frankfurt am Main ; † January 20, 1988 in Lübeck ) was a German administrative lawyer and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

Schneider studied from 1923 to 1927 jurisprudence at the Universities of Halle (Saale) and Kiel . During his student days he was active in the Pomerania Halle country team and remained there until the end of his life. He performed his legal preparatory service from 1927 to 1930 in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg . He then initially worked as an assessor in the service of the financial administration of the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck, where he worked as a government councilor in the presidential authority from 1932. During this time the foreseeable mediatization of Lübeck fell, which he was instrumental in, and the co-ordination of the Lübeck Senate in 1933 by the National Socialists. With the strategy of prior communalization of state assets, which he helped develop and implemented, an acceptable result could be achieved for the city of Lübeck in the implementation of the Greater Hamburg Act in the further transition negotiations with Prussia , as considerable assets were retained for the municipality of Lübeck, which otherwise would have become Prussian property. From 1938 to 1941 he was city syndic, from 1941 to 1945 city councilor and as such from 1941 was entrusted with the management of the business of the mayor Otto-Heinrich Drechsler , who himself was deployed in Riga . Drechsler's actual deputy Senator Hans Böhmcker was deployed in Amsterdam and took over the representation of Drechsler only for a short time after the air raid on March 29, 1942 until his suicide in the same year. In 1945, after Drechsler's arrest by the British Army and his suicide while in custody, Schneider was temporarily mayor of the city, but was removed from office by the British military government one month later on May 30, 1945 . From 1951 he was a senior administrator in the Lübeck building administration and in 1956 moved to the city's financial administration. From 1956 to 1968 he was the city's Senator for Finance.
