Pietro Stoffella d'Alta Rupe , also Peter Stoffella d'Alta Rupe (born March 9, 1795 in Raossi , Vallarsa , Welschtirol ; † April 28, 1871 in Vienna ) was an Austrian gynecologist .

Life

His father Pietro Giuseppe Stoffella was a landowner, timber merchant and mayor of the valley municipality of Vallarsa. Pietro attended the grammar school in Rovereto , the Lyceum in Trento , first enrolled in the academic year 1815/16 at the Philosophical Faculty and then from the academic year 1816/17 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. He received his doctorate in medicine on August 17, 1822 with the dissertation De morbo nuncupato pellagra , printed in Como in 1827. His dissertation on Pellagra was the first scientific work in southern Tyrol on this deficiency disease, which is widespread in his homeland.

Pietro Stoffella gained a reputation as a good gynecologist and was appointed to the ducal court in Modena; he refused an appointment as professor at the medical clinic there. In 1850 he became consiliarius of Empress Maria Anna of Savoy , wife of Emperor Ferdinand I. He received several high medals, in 1863 the Order of the Iron Crown, 3rd class. On December 5, 1863, with the letter of nobility from Emperor Franz Joseph I, he was raised to the hereditary knighthood with the predicate d'Alta Rupe . He was the father of Emil Stoffella .
