coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided lowered by silver and blue in a wavy cut. Above a red half-timbered barn, accompanied by a green star each in the right and left upper corners, below a silver mill wheel. "
According to the historical justification entered in the municipal coat of arms, the coat of arms shows the old barn of the Mehlbek estate and at the same time reminds of the agricultural character of the community. The mill wheel is said to be reminiscent of the place name "Möhlenbeke", which means "mill on the Bekau river ". The green stars stand for the lost home of the refugees, who found a new home in the place after the Second World War and helped to develop the community further.
However, this official reason for the coat of arms is not entirely correct: On the one hand, "Möhlenbek" does not mean "Mill on the river", but is the new Low German name for "Mühlenbach", so it does not refer to the mill, but to the stream; on the other hand, the mill was not on the “Bekau” river, but by the “Mühlenau” creek, which only flows into the Bekau, outside the municipality of Mehlbek. At all it is not certain whether the Middle Low German name form “Molenbeke”, which emerged in the early modern period, is not based on a folk etymological reinterpretation and whether the name originally had a different meaning.
Sports
Mehlbek has had its own sports club since 1982, the Mehlbeker V. The club has almost 100 members and is the only sport to offer football.
