Wacken Firefighters is the name under which the music train of the Wacken volunteer fire brigade performs at the Wacken Open Air . Since 2000 the band has opened the festival with a concert under the motto “Metal meets Brass” before the official start.

history

The history of the Wacken Firefighters can be traced back to 1900, when the Wacken music train was founded. The Second World War almost brought the music train to a standstill and the last remaining nine musicians wanted to quit for reasons of age. In 1965 it was rebuilt on the initiative of military leader Claus Bornholt. With the support of the professional musician Otto Milter and financial help from the community of Wacken and the fire brigade, the first practice evening after the war took place on April 1, 1965. Volker Vette, who died in March 2011, was the leader of the music train until 2011; the musical director and conductor has been Hans-Adolf Wieck since 2007.

Since January 17th, 2014 Stefan Bumann has been the official musical director and conductor of the Wacken Firefighters. He has been leading the rehearsals since March 2013, as well as acting as head of staff. Since Stefan Bumann had to play the trumpet with the WOA in 2014, Sandra Roth conducted the Firefighters as a substitute.

activities

In addition to the annual opening of the Open Air, the Musikzug played on the main stage of the festival in 2005 together with the band Onkel Tom . For a performance at the Wacken Open Air 2010, the Firefighters rehearsed some metal classics, which were specially rearranged for the performance by a wind orchestra. Activities also include appearances at the Cologne Rose Monday Parade , in which they have already participated 16 times in the course of their history.

Media coverage

The Wacken Firefighters are a regular part of media coverage of the Wacken Open Air: Spiegel Online writes : “The fire brigade orchestra sings the 'Schleswig-Holstein song' - and hundreds of long-haired people let their manes circled. (...) The village fire brigade orchestra is simply called 'Wacken Fire Fighters' for the festival, it sounds almost like a rock band. "

The world reports: “The music train of the Wacken fire brigade, the 'Wacken Firefighters', played and thousands of metal fans danced, roaring and sweating, with beer mugs spilling out, half the night. 'Wacken, Wacken fire brigade', the partly half-naked fans shout, while songs like the 'Zillertaler Hochzeitmarsch' and 'Rosamunde' were performed. "

The Wacken Firefighters are also mentioned in the half-hour ZDF report from 2008 "A village and 100,000 rock fans".
