Kaaksburg is a district of Kaaks in Holstein north of Itzehoe. The ring wall castle of the same name located there dates from the 8th or 9th century. Its oldest known documentary mention (at least under this name) comes from the years 1560–1576.

history

Not much is known about their origin and function. The oval-shaped ring wall having a diameter of 80 or 100 m and a height of about 5 was raised from dark earth m, while the bottom is sandy in the area, was therefore assumed that the material from flowing past in the southeast Bekau originates. At least to the north and east, the ring wall was also surrounded by a moat . In the west, the Mehlbeker Mühlenbach, which flows into the Bekau, also flows along.

At that time, the Bekau was navigable at least as far as the castle and was influenced by the tides until it was dyed; the surroundings of the castle were still swampy and boggy and at times flooded. It was therefore assumed that the castle was built in this strategically favorable position to control the waterway. According to a folk legend, it is said to have served as a base for pirates - sometimes Klaus Störtebeker is talking about it.

At least one iron ax was found near the castle complex by the end of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 1930s Hermann Hofmeister carried out excavations at the castle, the results of which he published in the excavation report published in 1932 under the title “Urholstein”.

While the Chaussee or country road between Itzehoe and Schenefeld used to bypass the ring wall to the east, today's L 127 runs through the middle of the ring. A memorial stone by the now wooded wall reminds of the former Kaaksburg.
