The Santa Ana Mountains ( English Santa Ana Mountains ) is a mountain range along the southern California Pacific coast in the United States . It extends over a length of almost 60 kilometers southeast of Los Angeles on the border between Orange County and Riverside County . The mountain range is named for the Santa Ana winds that occur in the region .
The highest mountain in the chain is the 1,734 meter high Santiago Peak east of Santa Ana . It is usually the only peak in the mountain range that is snow-capped in winter. Much of the mountain range is part of the Cleveland National Forest ; Parts are still private property of the two hundred year old ranches of the Irvine Company and Rancho Mission Viejo .
