The Chilkoot River is a river in the Alaska Panhandle in southern Alaska .
The Chilkoot River has its source at a height of around 1000 m in the glaciated Chilkoot Ranges , the northernmost part of the Boundary Ranges . From there it initially flows in a west-south-west direction, but then turns south-south-east and flows through a wide valley. It flows through Chilkat Lake and shortly afterwards - 20 km southwest of Skagway - flows into the northern end of Lutak Inlet , the western branch of Chilkoot Inlet . The Chilkoot River has a length of 32 km. The lower reaches of the Chilkoot River lies in the Haines State Forest .
Four so-called salmon runs take place on the Chilkoot River every year , starting in mid-June and ending in mid-October. The salmon swim upstream to their spawning grounds . This attracts bears who hunt salmon by the river and Chilkoot Lake.
