Alaska Route 1

The Sterling Highway is a 229 km / 142 mi long highway in southern Alaska that runs from the Seward Highway at Tern Lake Junction (140 km / 90 mi south of Anchorage ) to Homer .

Construction of the highway began in 1947 and was completed in 1950. It is part of Alaska Route 1 . It runs west of Tern Lake to Soldotna , parallel to the Kenai River , where it turns south to follow the east bank of the Cook Inlet . The Sterling Highway is the only highway on the central and western Kenai Peninsula . The majority of the population of the Kenai Peninsula Borough lives along the highway. The highway also opens up several fertile and popular fishing grounds.

The southern end of the highway is at the top of Homer Spit , a sandbar that extends 8 km / 5 mi into Kachemak Bay . A ferry terminal connects the road with the Alaska Marine Highway .

Milestones along the Sterling Highway do not start at mile 0 but at mile 37 because they continue the numbering of the Seward Highway . Milestone 0 is in the center of Seward City , at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Railway Avenue.
