The Kachemak Bay is a 64 km long bay in the southwest of the Kenai Peninsula in the US state of Alaska that in Homer with the Cook Inlet is connected.
A headland extends southeast from Homer and separates the bay from the open sea. This forms the southern end point of Alaska Route 1 . In addition to Homer, the towns of Halibut Cove , Seldovia and Kachemak are located on the bay . The Fox River , fed by the Harding Icefield , flows into the bay. Other tributaries include the Martin River , Sheep Creek, and Bradley River .
South of the bay is the Kachemak Bay State Park and State Wilderness Park, a 1620 km² large protected area, the first state park in Alaska.
"Kachemak" means something like "big cliff by the water" in Yup'ik . A previous name of the bay was Chugachnik Gulf .
