Soldotna is a city in the Kenai Peninsula Borough of the US state Alaska . It is located in the west of the Kenai Peninsula , a few kilometers from the coast of Cook Inlet . The Sterling Highway crosses the Kenai River at Soldotna .
Under the Homestead Act in 1947, the US government allowed World War II veterans to take possession of land on the site of what is now Soldotna. A small village was formed that had 332 inhabitants in 1960.
In 1957 oil was found in the region around Soldotna, which gave the place a small economic boom.
Today the city lives from sport fishing and tourism and is the seat of the administration of the Kenai Peninsula Borough.
