R1 Airlines (formerly Regional 1 Airlines ) is a Canadian airline based in Calgary that specializes in ACMI rentals . It operates its aircraft in wet lease for other companies.

history

The company was founded in Spring 2003 as a subsidiary of the Avmax Group in Calgary . Because the group already owned a Calgary-based company called Westpoint Aviation , the new airline was initially named Westpoint Airlines . She took over her first aircraft in May 2003 with a De Havilland DHC-8-100 . Before flight operations began, the company was renamed Regional 1 Airlines . Three more DHC-8-100 added to the fleet by the end of 2003. Until the start of scheduled flight operations , the machines were used in charter traffic . In October 2004, the company set up a route network from Lethbridge that initially included the cities of Red Deer , Kelowna and Vancouver . The regional regular service was not profitable and was terminated in September 2005. Then sat Regional 1 Airlines their machines on national charter flights and at world level wetlease one for other airlines and other companies.

In November 2013, the two parent companies of Regional 1 Airlines and Air Georgian merged to form the Holding Regional Express Aviation Limited (REAL). The two airlines brought in remained as legal sole proprietorships. Because Regional 1 Airlines was exclusively active in the area of ACMI leasing , it was renamed R1 Airlines in spring 2014 .

After Transport Canada revoked the company's air operator certificate in April 2019 , R1 Airlines temporarily ceased operations in June of the same year. The airline stated at the time that it was planning to resume flight operations.
