Nolisair International Inc.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nolisair International Inc. (formerly Nolisair Internationale Inc. ) was a Canadian holding company . The company served as the parent company for the airline Nationair and the maintenance base Aviation Technair .

history

Nolisair Internationale Inc, was founded on January 14th, 1980 by Robert Obadia . Back then, the company was supposed to be operating as an airline. The headquarters were at Montreal-Mirabel Airport , where Nationair and Technair were also based . Like Nationair, the company was primarily to operate charter flights. However, the Air Operator Certificate was rejected by the Canadian Department of Transportation, whereupon the plan was canceled. The operating license was only granted in September 1983, after the deregulation of Canadian airspace. For financial reasons, Nolisair was converted into a holding company and the AOC was transferred to Nationair , which received two used Douglas DC-8-61s from JAL . The company operated the first flight on December 19, 1984, as a charter flight from Montreal to Port-au-Prince . Aviation Technair was founded on May 28, 1985 and had its maintenance base at Montréal-Mirabel International Airport . All Nationair machines were serviced here and repaired if necessary. The next year the company was renamed Nolisair International Inc.

Since Nationair received more and more orders, new aircraft were needed, which were finally obtained including personnel through the takeover of Odyssey International . Their two Boeing 757-200s were then used by Nationair on a leasing basis. Nationair operated a total of 9 Boeing 757s . A Boeing 747-200 of the TWA went into service from 1990 to 1992 for heavily frequented routes . When a Douglas DC-8 crashed near Jeddah on July 11, 1991 , the company faced serious financial difficulties, with some Douglas DC-8-61, 62 and 63 being phased out. However, older machines, such as the DC-8 or the older Boeing 747-100 , often had technical failures, which is why some tour operators switched to Air Transat , which is also based in Montreal .

The last rescue attempt by Nolisair was to put Air Canada and Canadian Airlines under pressure on the Montreal - Toronto route , which failed. All three companies had to file for bankruptcy. The six remaining Boeing 747-200s were either returned to the lessors or sold. In addition, the Technair operation was taken over by Air Transat, along with the nine remaining Boeing 757-200s. Nolisair International Inc. filed for bankruptcy before Nationair and Technair .
