Air BC was formed in 1980 following the merger (by the Jim Pattison Group ) of a number of domestic airlines on the west coast: Canadian Air Transit, Flight Operation, Gulf Air Aviation, Haida Airlines, Island Airlines, Ominecca Air, Pacific Coast Air Services and West Coast Air Services . A large fleet was created, including STOL aircraft and some De Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otters , some of which were seaplanes . In 1983, STOL capable DHC-7 turboprop aircraft were delivered and in 1986 DHC-8-100 turboprops were acquired.

In 1987, Air Canada acquired 85% of Air BC and Air BC became an Air Canada regional partner operating as the Air Canada Connector . Air BC entered the jet age in 1988 with the British Aerospace BAe 146 . This was the only type of jet aircraft ever operated by the aviation company. In 1994, British Aerospace airline operated Jetstream 31 as part of its Air Canada Connector code-sharing agreement. Elongated DHC-8-300 turboprop aircraft were eventually also flown in. In March 1995 Air Canada acquired the remaining shares in Air BC.

In January 2001, a newly merged subsidiary called Air Canada Regional Inc was formed. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Canada, the company operated the individual routes of the five regional airlines - Air BC, Air Nova , Air Ontario , Air Alliance and Canadian Regional Airlines . The merger of these five companies was completed in 2002 and marked the launch of a new brand: Air Canada Jazz .
