Air Toronto (originally Commuter Express ) was a Canadian airline based in Mississauga and based at Toronto-Pearson Airport , which merged with Ontario Express in November 1991 .

history

The company was founded on December 17, 1984 as a non-independent division of the Canadian cargo airline Soundair , which was founded in 1973 and wanted to offer these passenger flights. Passenger flight operations began the following year on the route from Toronto-Pearson to Columbus (USA) with machines of the type Fairchild Swearingen Metro and were operated externally under the name Commuter Express . After Soundair was able to conclude a cooperation agreement with Air Canada in 1988 , the scheduled flights took place under the changed brand name Air Toronto . In the same year, Soundair, the first Canadian customer for its passenger division, initially acquired five BAe Jetstream 31 aircraft , which were delivered from January 1989.

In April 1990, the Soundair group of companies, which also included the charter airline Odyssey International , filed for bankruptcy . The profitable Air Toronto division could be separated from the bankruptcy estate and converted into an independent company. In the following year, both Air Canada and the regional airline Ontario Express , which was owned by Canadian Airlines International , sought to take over the company. After Ontario Express won the bidding dispute, Air Toronto was merged with them in November 1991.

Destinations

Air Toronto flew from Toronto-Pearson Airport to the US cities of Allentown, Harrisburg, Columbus, Dayton, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Indianapolis and Louisville.

In February 1991 the fleet consisted of nine BAe Jetstream 31 and one Fairchild Swearingen Metro.
