Stefan Lano (born March 14, 1952 in Worcester ) is an American composer , répétiteur and conductor . He has lived in Basel since 1995 and has been a Swiss citizen since 2010.

Live and act

After completing school at Worcester Academy , Lano began his musical training in 1970, initially as a pianist and later specialized as a composer and conductor. After the world premiere of his 1st symphony at the Newport Music Festival in 1975, he completed his studies in composition at Oberlin College and then obtained a Ph.D. on a full scholarship. in composition and music theory from Harvard University . With the support of a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service, Lano deepened his knowledge of composition with Yun I-sang in Berlin in 1977 , during which his 2nd symphony (Grodek) was created. Subsequently, the Graz Opera House engaged him as a répétiteur.

In 1982 Lorin Maazel , the new director of the Vienna State Opera , also appointed him as a répétiteur in his management team. After Lorin Maazel's move to Pittsburgh in 1988, Lano followed him and was appointed Deputy Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and at the same time Principal Conductor of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 1991 Lano returned to Europe and took on temporary engagements or guest appearances at various opera houses and theaters with renowned orchestras, including the Hamburg State Opera and the Lithuanian National Theater in Vilnius . From 1992 to 1993, during the vacancy of the general music director there , he worked as Kapellmeister and acting music director (chief musical director) at the Aachen Theater. Further stations were then in Graz, Basel, Munich and Nuremberg . In addition, Lano made several guest appearances in Argentina between 1993 and 1999, where he appeared at the Teatro Colón and the Teatro Argentino and with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra and was named the best foreign conductor by the Society of Argentine Music Critics in 1999.

As early as 1997, Lano moved his main area of ​​activity to the North American continent, where he made guest appearances at the Metropolitan Opera , the San Francisco Opera , the Houston Grand Opera , the Cincinnati Opera and with the Orchester symphonique de Montréal . In the meantime he was repeatedly invited back to his old Argentine and European places of work as well as to Singapore . During this time in 2004 the world premiere of his third symphony (Sinfonia Eikasia) with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra . In addition, from 2005 to 2008 Lano took on the role of chief conductor at the Teatro Colón and from 2012 to 2015 the post of music director of the National Symphony Uruguay. From the 2017/20 season he will be first conductor of the German National Theater (DNT) and the Staatskapelle Weimar for three years .
