The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra ( lit.Lietuvos nacionalinis simfoninis orkestras , LNSO) is an orchestra of the Philharmonic of Lithuania in Vilnius ( Lithuania ). The LNSO has performed in the most famous concert halls in Moscow and Saint Petersburg and has taken part in many international festivals, including the Prague Spring Festival , the International Festival of Contemporary Music in Saint Petersburg and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival .

history

In October 1940, the Soviet-Lithuanian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra was founded on the initiative of Balys Dvarionas . The first concert took place on December 26, 1940. From 1945 to 1958 the orchestra belonged to the Lietuvos TSR radijo komitetas .

The orchestra's guest soloists included a. the singers Elena Čiudakova , Valentinas Adamkevičius , Virgilijus Noreika , Irena Milkeviciute , Gražina Apanavičiūtė , Violeta Urmana , Regina Maciūtė , Sergej Larin , Vaclovas Daunoras , Vladimir Prudnikov , Irina Archipova , Algirdas Janutas , Montserrat Caballé and Jessye Norman , pianists Stasys Vainiunas , Balys Dvarionas, Aldona Dvarionaitė , Petras Geniušas , Mūza Rubackytė , Birutė Vainiūnaitė , Emil Gilels , Dmitri Bashkirov , Daniel Pollack , Lazar Berman , the violinist Alexander Livont , Raimundas Katilius , Vilhelmas Čepinskis , Leonid Kogan , Vladimir Spivakov , Gidon Kremer , Julian Rachlin , Wiktor Tretyakov , the violist Juri Baschmet , the cellists Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , Daniil Schafran , David Geringas , Natalja Gutman and Alexander Rudin .

The orchestra conducted a. a. Stefan Lano , Saulius Sondeckis , Jonas Aleksa , Konradas Kaveckas , Vladimir Fedoseyev , Mstislaw Rostropowitsch, Kurt Masur , Justus Frantz , Cyril Diederich , Neeme Järvi , Christoph Spering , Krzysztof Penderecki , Christoph Eschenbach and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla .

Artistic Director

Artistic director was from 1940 to 1941 and from 1958 to 1964 Balys Dvarionas. From 1964 to 2015 the orchestra was under the direction of chief conductor Juozas Domarkas . Modestas Pitrėnas has been artistic director and chief conductor since 2015 .
