Catholic parish church Nickelsdorf
The Roman Catholic parish church Nickelsdorf stands above the street in the municipality of Nickelsdorf ( Hungarian : " Miklóshalma ") in the Neusiedl am See district in Burgenland . It is consecrated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the Deanery Neusiedl am See .
history
In 1572 a church in Nickelsdorf was mentioned for the first time. A letter in the monastery council files describes this church in 1606 as "origine antiqua" (Latin for 'from ancient times'). The old church, built before 1572, stood in the middle of the cemetery. According to reports of the church visit in 1696, a statue of the Mother of God with the baby Jesus stood on one of the altars . Only one bell hung in the tower. In 1739 the Catholic parish became independent again. The first pastor of the new congregation was Matthias Kern. The majority of the population opposed him because of differences in faith. Despite various coercive measures to convert the apostates, he did not succeed in returning them to the solitary church. After three years he gave up and left the parish. Most of the successors did not stay long either, only Pastor Michael Lentsch held this office for 25 years. The remaining pastors in the 18th and early 19th centuries only stayed in Nickelsdorf for between 10 and 13 years on average until they applied for other vacancies as pastors or were transferred. Leonhard Berger, the tenant of the manorial sheep farm, donated a side altar in 1762.
According to the report of the canonical visitation in 1778, the Catholic Church stood on a hill at the end of the village, which protected it from fire. It was described as old and narrow and could only hold half of the believers: of around 450 Catholic believers, there was room for about 230.
The tower, made of fired bricks, was very damp and the clock had to be repaired. The bell in the tower consisted of two bells. In the interior, the main altar was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the side altar to the Virgin Mary donated by Leonhard Berger. The pulpit was old and in poor condition, as was the wooden worm-eaten choir and the organ.
In 1884 a church building fund was set up. At the request of the pastor, the Catholic landowners and the Archducal Goods Directorate waived their hunting shares in favor of the church building fund. The new church was built in 1904 and 1905 with the help of this fund and additional donations from the patron saint, who donated 40,000 guilders. The builder Oross Istvan took over the construction planning and construction.
In autumn 1904 the last service was celebrated in the old church and the demolition started afterwards. The material was used to build the new church north of the old church. On October 15, 1905, the new church was consecrated with a festival service.
After the construction of the new Catholic church, a parish garden was created on the site of the old church. The mortuary was built on this in 1972–74.
