Air Atlantic was an airline based in Canada . Founded in 1985 in St. Johns, the airline began operations in Newfoundland on February 28, 1986 with three four-engine De Havilland Canada DHC-7 aircraft . These were replaced by De Havilland DHC-8 between April and August 1987 .
The small airline flew mostly in a partnership for Canadian Pacific Air Lines (CP Air) and later for their subsidiary Inter-Canadian.
Air Atlantic received its first jet in 1990 in the form of the BAe 146 and began flying international routes to the United States , while the DHC-8 fleet grew to 20 at times. From the end of 1990 financial difficulties increasingly made Air Atlantic to create, whereupon CP Air bought a substantial share in the airline.
A second base was opened at Halifax Airport ( Nova Scotia ). In 1995 Air Atlantic received five British Aerospace Jetstream 41s , which were used with 27 seats on less frequented routes.
On October 25, 1998, the financially troubled airline ceased operations. At that time the fleet still consisted of 5 BAe J-41s, 4 DHC-8-100s and 3 BAe 146-200s.
