Canadian North , legally Air NorTerra Inc , is a Canadian cargo and passenger airline based in Yellowknife and based at Yellowknife Airport . It is wholly owned by the Inuvialuit and Inuit indigenous people of western Canada and the Northwest Territories .
history
Retrospectively, the history of Canadian North can be traced back to 1926, when Canadian Airways was founded, which later became Canadian Pacific Air Lines and then merged with Western Pacific into Canadian Airlines International (CAI). In 1998 the Northern Division of the CAI was sold to the NorTerra, which is owned equally by the indigenous Inuvialuit and Inuit people. The route network was largely retained during the takeover. The airline called itself in its current name Canadian North and defines this as its official founding date. The rest are summarized under the terms predecessor company and experience. In 2008 Canadian North celebrated its 10th birthday.
Destinations
Canadian North operates its main base and its main hub in Yellowknife and also has a smaller base in Iqaluit, about 2,500 kilometers away. The destinations are mainly used to supply the residents of northern and western Canada, whereby in addition to passenger transport, mainly cargo is flown. The two Boeing 737-200Cs , which have a cabin, in which the passenger seating can be quickly converted into a cargo configuration, either completely or in part, are used for this purpose. These aircraft C-GDPA and C-GOPW have the Unpaved Strip Kit (protective plates on the landing gear and a system of tubes to dissolve vortices in front of the engines) and are therefore suitable for landing on gravel runways. Destinations from the Yellowknife hub include Calgary, Edmonton, Inuvik, Norman Wells, Hay River, Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven, Taloyoak, Kugaaruk, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit. From Iqaluit there is a connection to the capital Ottawa and flights, as in Yellowknife, to other small airports in the region. Canadian North also flies some routes, especially for smaller destinations with stopovers. International flights are also operated by Canadian North, but exclusively in charter, for example to the USA.
In order to offer its customers better connections, the Canadian North operates agreements and partnerships with numerous airlines. The most important partnerships exist with the regional airline Calm Air and the Canadian flag carrier Air Canada . There are also partnerships with Aklak Air , Air Tindi and North-Wright Airways .
