Buenaventura Báez Méndez (born July 14, 1812 in Hispaniola , † March 14, 1884 in Hormigueros , Puerto Rico ) was five-time President of the Dominican Republic .

biography

In 1844 he participated in the successful uprising against Haiti , as a result of which the independence of the Dominican Republic was strengthened. In 1846 he traveled to France to achieve the establishment of a French protectorate over the Dominican Republic, albeit unsuccessfully. During his first presidency from 1849 to 1853, he also tried unsuccessfully to persuade the United States to occupy the republic. President again from 1856 to 1858, he was overthrown in a coup and went into exile in Spain. There he led a dissolute life and planned the takeover of the Dominican Republic by the Spanish crown. Although the Spanish king showed himself inclined in 1861 and installed four governors in the Dominican Republic, he gave up the colony in 1865 and again released it into independence.

Thereupon Báez returned to his homeland and stood for the presidential election, which he also won. In May 1866, however, he was overthrown again. During his fourth term, from 1868 to 1874, he tried again for the United States to take over the country. After all, he got President Ulysses S. Grant to send warships to the Dominican Republic and brought an annexation treaty to the American Senate, which, however, did not ratify it. Grant then had to withdraw the warships.

From 1876 to 1878 Báez was president for the fifth time, but was overthrown again in a coup and went into exile in Puerto Rico , which was then a Spanish colony. He died there in 1884.
