José Desiderio Valverde (* around 1822 in Santiago de los Caballeros ; † 1903 ) was a Dominican politician and President of the Dominican Republic .

biography

On the independence movement La Trinitaria he joined in 1844 at the same time in the army and took over as captain on dominikanisch- Haitian War of 1844 and at the famous battle of 30 March 1844 in part, but a year has already been out in 1845 as a deputy of the deputy meeting of the province of Santiago chosen .

On July 7, 1857, he became general leader of the civil, military and ecclesiastical forces in the province of Santiago, which had previously decided due to the mood of the people to no longer recognize the government of President Buenaventura Báez . Instead, a separate Provisional Government was formed in the regions of Cibao, of which Valverde became President. On July 22, 1857, the Provisional Government of Cibao declared itself the Provisional Government of the entire Dominican Republic, so that there was another government in addition to the government of Báez.

After the new liberal constitution of Moca was passed on February 19, 1858, he became president on March 1, 1858 with Benigno Filomeno de Rojas as vice-president. Besides the reorganization of the public administration and the army, his government's priorities were the introduction of a monetary system . The army was largely led by General Pedro Santana , who soon besieged the government of President Báez in Santo Domingo and could count on the support of the population there. On June 12, 1858, Báez surrendered , who immediately went into exile in Spain .

However, instead of the leader of the Santana coup d'état, Valverde was sworn in as President of the Dominican Republic on the same day . However, another coup took place on July 28, 1858. He then had to resign and hand over the presidency to General Santana. On August 31, 1858, he also went into exile in Polynesia, where he died 45 years later.

The province of Valverde was named in his honor on June 7, 1900 .
