Nicolae Corneanu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolae Mihail Corneanu (born November 21, 1923 in Caransebeş , † September 28, 2014 in Timişoara ) was Metropolitan of the Romanian Orthodox Church . Since 1962 he held the offices of the Orthodox Archbishop of Timișoara and the Metropolitan of the Banat . On March 4, 1990, he consecrated Daniel Ciobotea , the later patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, as auxiliary bishop in Timișoara.

Cooperation with the Romanian State Security

Immediately after the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , Metropolitan Corneanu confessed to spying for the Romanian secret police Securitate for 41 years . According to his own account, his cooperation with the State Security began in the autumn of 1948 when he was arrested on charges of having hosted a German refugee. He felt guilty about this collaboration. In December 1990 he became a member of the non-governmental organization Alianța Civică .

Commitment to ecumenism

In 1978 he was a Vice-President of the Christian Peace Conference . On January 19, 1990, immediately after the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was relegated , he handed over the Lugoj Cathedral to this religious community, which it had owned until 1948. Metropolitan Corneanu ensured peaceful coexistence between the Orthodox and the Uniate (Greek-Catholic) Christians. As an exception in the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Archdiocese of Timișoara accommodated the patrimonial demands of the Uniate Church, so that in Timiș County after the political change in 1989 there were no conflicts regarding the return of property to the Uniate Church.

On May 25, 2008, Metropolitan Corneanu received the Eucharist in a Catholic Mass, which sparked an outraged reaction in the anti-Western wing of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church dealt with its meeting on 8/9. July 2008 with it. In advance, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Timișoara, Martin Roos , asked in an open letter to all members of the Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church for consideration for the bond between Orthodox and Catholics, which would suffer serious damage if the Metropolitan Corneanu were convicted. At the synod, Corneanu described his participation in the Catholic Eucharist as a mistake; therefore no punishment was given.

Award

Disempowerment

On May 20, 2011, at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Corneanu was deprived of the right to sign documents as a metropolitan; this was tantamount to his removal. The move was justified with alleged health problems, which Corneanu's supporters denied.
