Monseñor Nouel is a province in the center of the Dominican Republic . In 1992 the province was separated as the southeastern part of La Vega province and has been an independent province ever since. It is named after Monseñor Dr. Adolfo Alejandro Nouel y Bobadilla (* 1862, † 1937), Archbishop of Santo Domingo and later President of the Dominican Republic in 1912/13.

geography

The province of Monseñor Nouel is located between the two defining cities of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo and Santiago, on the main thoroughfare Carretera Duarte .

The surrounding provinces are La Vega , Sánchez Ramírez , San Cristóbal and San José de Ocoa .

economy

The main economic factor in the province is agriculture and cattle breeding . In addition to the country's local products such as mangoes, oranges and bananas, coffee, cocoa, rice and vegetables are also grown.

The Canadian Falconbridge group has built a nickel smelter near the provincial capital of Bonao , on the Carretera Duarte . However, the Dominicans are not satisfied with the negotiated contracts that allow the ruthless exploitation of natural resources.
