Falconbridge Limited was a Canadian mining company based in Toronto . The company operated branches in 18 countries around the world, which dealt with the exploration, extraction, processing and marketing of metals and mineral products. Falconbridge's main products were nickel , copper , cobalt and platinum . In June 2005, the company merged with Noranda Inc. , with the company continued under the name Falconbridge.

The main mining area for Falconbridge ores was around the Sudbury Basin . Further production facilities were located in Ontario (Timmins), Quebec (Rouyn-Noranda, Montreal, Nunavik), New Braunschweig (Bathurst), as well as in the USA (Tennessee, Missouri), the Dominican Republic, South America (Chile, Peru) and in Norway ( Kristiansand ).

In October 2005, the Canadian mining company Inco announced that it would buy Falconbridge for $ 12 billion. After lengthy negotiations, the US company Phelps Dodge announced on June 26, 2006 that it would take over both Canadian companies for US $ 56 billion. At the end of 2006, however, the winner in the bidding dispute was Xstrata , which Falconbridge was able to acquire. Xstrata incorporated Falconbridge under the name Xstrata Nickel in its group. Inco, on the other hand, was taken over by the Brazilian company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce and today, after changing its name several times, operates as Vale Canada.
