history

In 1504 the province was first settled with the establishment of Compostela de Azua , later Azua de Compostela . The founder of the settlement, Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar , was the later conqueror of Cuba . Azua is one of the oldest European settlements in the New World.

After an earthquake on October 16, 1751 and almost complete destruction, the city of Azua was re-established eight kilometers to the north.

The province itself was founded in 1844 as one of the first five provinces after the independence of the Dominican Republic. At that time, the regions around San Juan de la Maguana, Las Matas de Farfán, Neyba, Las Caobas, Hincha, Bánica, San Miguel de la Atalaya and San Rafael were also included.

economy

The main line of business is agriculture. The most important products are white beans (habichuelas), plantains (plátanos), coffee and fruit trees, some of which are exported. Fishing is done in the coastal regions, although this accounts for a small share of the economy. Tomatoes in particular are processed industrially in this region.

In the port of Puerto Viejo , most of the crude oil is unloaded for national use and processed in the nearby refinery .

The province is still undeveloped for tourism, with a few exceptions in Monterrío, Playa Chiquita and Palmar de Ocoa.
