Arsi (province)

Arsi (also written Arussi or Arssi , Ethiopian script : አርሲ arsi ) was a province of Ethiopia from 1886 to 1995 .

Since 1995 it has been an administrative zone within the Oromia region as the Arsi zone .

Its capital is Assela , other larger towns are Asebe Teferi , Bekoji , Bedesa , Gelemso , Hirna , Mieso , Asebot , Kofele , Asasa , Gobesa , Huruta , Robe , Iteya , Sire , Dera and Abomsa . The zone had more than 3 million inhabitants in 2005.

Arsi is named after the Arsi - Oromo who live here and in the neighboring former province of Bale . The Arsi were incorporated into Ethiopia in the 19th century. From 1881 to 1886, several military campaigns were carried out by the Ethiopian side. The conclusion of the conquest was marked by the events of Anole in 1886, where the Ethiopians captured male Arsi amputated the right hand and women amputated the chest in order to break the resistance of the Arsi and induce them to surrender. In the same year the area was attached to Ethiopia as a new province.
