Illubabor (province)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Illubabor (ኢሉባቦር, from Oromo Illuu Baaboor ) was a province in southwest Ethiopia , on the border with Sudan .

The province was founded at the end of the 19th century after the area was conquered and incorporated into the Abyssinian Empire . Its capital was Gore until 1978 , after which Metu became the new capital. In addition to areas in the southern highlands, which formed the core area of the province, Illubabor also included Gambela , which geographically belongs to the Sudanese lowlands. Gambela was separated from Illubabor as a separate province in 1987. The east of Illubabor is part of the historic Gibe area .

With the reform of the administrative structure of Ethiopia after 1991, the area of Illubabor was divided into the ethnically defined regions Oromia , Gambela and the region of the southern nations, nationalities and peoples .

One zone in the Oromia region continues to be called the Illubabor Zone .
