Woolga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Woolga (or Welega , Amharic ወለጋ wälläga ) was a traditional province in the western part of Ethiopia, with its capital near Nekemte .

The province was named after the Welega-Oromo , who made up the majority of the population within its borders.

Welega was bordered in the west by the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and in the north by the Abbay River , which at the same time delimited it from the province of Gojjam . The province of Shewa was to the east, the province of Kaffa to the southeast and the province of Illubabor to the south .

history

After Ethiopia was liberated from Italian occupation in Italian East Africa in 1941 during World War II , the following provinces were assigned to the Welega Province in order to simplify administration: the semi-autonomous areas of Asosa , Beni Shangul , Leqa Nekemte and Leqa Kellam , as well as the Province of Sibu .

The borders of Welega remained unchanged until the adoption of the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1995, when Welega was further subdivided. Parts of its territory became the Asosa Zone and the Kamashi Zone of the Benishangul Gumuz Region. The rest became part of the Mirab-Welega Zone , the Misraq-Welega Zone and the Illubabor Zone of the Oromia region.
