The Cordillera Central is a mountain range of the island of Hispaniola and is mostly located in the territory of the Dominican Republic . The longest and most important rivers of Hispaniola have their source here: the Artibonite , the Río Yaque del Norte , the Río Yaque del Sur and the Río Yuna .
The mountains originally go back to a volcanic chain. It extends in a northwest-southeast orientation from the Saint-Nicolas peninsula in Haiti , in the Dominican Republic from Restauración and the Loma de Cabrera to the vicinity of Baní and San Cristóbal . Regarding the eastern extent of the mountains, however, there are different views: Some geographers take the view that it extends from east to west from Cabo Engaño to the border. Others, on the other hand, assume a purely northwest-southeast orientation and refer to the foothills, which extends further to the east, as Cordillera Oriental or El Seibo .
The highest mountains are the Pico Duarte with 3098 m, La Pelona with 3097 m, La Rusilla with 3029 m, Monte Mijo with 2200 m and the Monte Tina with 2059 m.
