The Río Yaque del Norte is a river in the Dominican Republic .

With a length of 296 km, it is the longest river in the country and the second longest on the island of Hispaniola . It rises in the Cordillera Central and flows into the Bahía de Montecristi , west of the city of San Fernando de Monte Cristi , into the Atlantic . It drains an area of ​​about 7053 km² and has an average flow velocity of 80 m³ / s. The Río Yaque del Norte initially flows to the northeast, and after the city of Santiago de los Caballeros , it constantly turns in numerous meanders in a west-northwest direction.

  • Just above Jarabacoa, the river is used for water sports: rafting, kayaking, tubing. Several leisure facilities for tourist use were created there.
  • The "Presa de Taveras" reservoir is used to generate electricity. The water of the Rio Bao is also fed into this reservoir.
  • In addition, water from the Presa de Taveras is fed through a tunnel into the "Contraembalse Lopez" reservoir, from where it is also used to generate electricity.
  • Just above Santiago there is another very popular bathing place, the Balneareo Timbeke. Below Santiago, the water quality is only sufficient to irrigate fields.
