description

Carpinus tsaiana is a tree up to 30 meters high with cracked, gray bark . The branches are purple and bald. The leaves have an approximately 1.5 centimeter long, bare or sparsely shaggy stalk. The leaf blade is 7 to 14 centimeters long, 4.5 to 6 centimeters wide, elliptical, oblong, oblong-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, with a pointed end, heart-shaped or blunt heart-shaped base and an irregular, double, finely serrated leaf edge. 14 to 16 pairs of nerves are formed. The upper side of the leaf is glabrous and densely covered with point-like glands, the underside is sparsely shaggy hairy along the leaf veins and has axillary whiskers.

The female inflorescences are 10 to 14 inches long. The inflorescence axis is about 3 inches long and glabrous. The bracts are 2.5 to 3 inches long, 1.5 to 1.8 inches wide, half-ovoid wide with a pointed or pointed end. The outer leaf margin is roughly toothed to lobed without a basal lobe; the inner part has entire margins or is narrow and finely serrated with a rolled-up basal auricle . The leaves have five first-order veins. The veins arranged like a net are clearly visible. As fruits are 5 to 6 mm long, triangular, ovoid to broadly ovate significantly ribbed at the top and close villous hairy Nüsschen formed with orange resin glands. Carpinus tsaiana flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to September.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the southwest of the Chinese provinces of Guizhou and in the southeast of Yunnan . The species grows in subtropical forests at an altitude of 1200 to 1500 meters.
